Local General Store in Ashe County Worth the Stop
Lansing & Old Orchard Creek General Store
Just a short drive from Grassy Creek, the small and vibrant town of Lansing is home to several charming businesses and one of the most scenic and accessible stretches along the North Fork of the New River.
One of our favorite stops is Old Orchard Creek General Store, located in the historic Hart Store in Lansing, NC. Opened in 2021, it blends the feel of a traditional small town store in Ashe County, NC with a thoughtfully curated modern café experience.
Inside, you’ll find a seasonal menu featuring house-made food with local ingredients whenever possible—everything from quiche and breakfast burritos to biscuits and gravy, focaccia, and rotating specials based on what’s fresh. Weekend brunch is especially worth the drive.
Beyond the food, the space is filled with local art, specialty goods, and a hand-picked selection of wines, including European vintages. With live music, wine tastings, and occasional farm-to-table dinners, it’s more than just a stop—it’s a place to gather.

Originally established as a homestead in 1824, the current house was built in 1943 and later transformed into the River House Country Inn and Restaurant in the late 1980s. It has long been part of the fabric of Grassy Creek—and part of our own family’s story here.
