Plan Your Visit to Grassy Creek, NC

Tucked into the rolling farmland of Ashe County, Grassy Creek is one of those rare places that still feels undiscovered.

It’s quiet here. Slower. More intentional.

People don’t come to Grassy Creek to rush from one attraction to the next. They come to sit on a porch with a cup of coffee, take in the long-range views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and watch as life in the valley unfolds at its own pace.

If you’re looking for a weekend that feels different—in the best way—this is it.

Stay in the Heart of Grassy Creek

One of the best ways to experience Grassy Creek is to stay right here in the valley.

Carolina Pines, our Airbnb just across the creek from The Old Store, offers a peaceful mountain retreat with all the comforts of home. Perched on a hillside, this three-bedroom, two-bath home features expansive porches and sweeping views in every direction. It’s the kind of place where mornings start slowly and evenings stretch a little longer.

Stay at Carolina Pines

There are also many other places to stay nearby, from cabins tucked along the New River to farm stays and mountain homes throughout Grassy Creek, Lansing, and West Jefferson. Whether you’re looking for something cozy and rustic or more modern and spacious, you’ll find options that let you truly settle into the rhythm of the mountains.

Where to Stay Resources

Start Your Day at The Old Store

A visit to Grassy Creek isn’t complete without stopping by The Old Store.

Originally opened in the early 1900s, the store has long been a gathering place for the community—serving at different times as a post office, doctor’s office, and general store.

Today, it’s a place to slow down and enjoy simple things done well.

Come in for fresh baked pastries, a cup of coffee, or a scoop of ice cream. Browse a thoughtfully curated selection of local foods, Appalachian-made goods, gifts, toys, and a few surprises along the way. Or simply sit on the porch for a while and take in the view.

More than anything, we love meeting the people who find their way here.

Explore the Outdoors at Your Own Pace

Grassy Creek is surrounded by some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Blue Ridge Mountains, but you don’t have to go far to enjoy them.

You can spend the day hiking at nearby Grayson Highlands State Park, where wild ponies roam the open balds, or take in sweeping views from Mount Jefferson State Natural Area.

You can visit New River State Park, where trails, river access points, and an education center tell the story of the effort to preserve one of the oldest rivers in the world from being dammed in the 1970s.

Or you can do what many of us love most—simply go for a walk.

Step out onto the gravel road beside The Old Store and follow it as far as you’d like. You can wander at your own pace along quiet country roads, taking in the views and the rhythm of the valley.

If you’re up for more exploring, you can continue down Grassy Creek Road, over to Weaver Ford Road, and toward the New River. It’s a beautiful route—but might be best enjoyed by car or a mix of walking and driving depending on how long you want to be gone! Cross the bridge, explore the peaceful roads along the water, or continue on to see where the North and South Forks of the river come together before heading north toward Virginia.

There’s no rush here. That’s the point.

Spend Time on the New River

The New River is at the heart of this place.

Wide in history but gentle in nature, it’s one of the oldest rivers in the world and one of the most peaceful ways to experience Ashe County.

You can tube, kayak, canoe, or fly fish along its shallow, rocky waters, surrounded by tree-lined banks and mountain views. Several local outfitters nearby offer rentals and guided experiences, making it easy to spend a full day on the river—or just a few quiet hours.

Explore West Jefferson and Ashe County

Just a short drive from Grassy Creek, West Jefferson offers a lively mix of art, food, and small-town charm.

Spend the day wandering downtown, where murals line the streets and local shops, galleries, and restaurants invite you to slow down and explore. Stop by Ashe County Cheese, catch a show at the Parkway Theater, or simply enjoy a meal and a walk through town.

If you need a break from the energy of downtown (or air conditioning), the Ashe County Library overlooking the town offers a quiet place to sit, read, and take in the view, with a park and playground just behind it.

Throughout Ashe County, you’ll also find wineries, cideries, scenic parks, and small communities like Lansing and Glendale Springs, each with their own character and charm.

A Place Rooted in History

Grassy Creek isn’t just beautiful—it’s deeply rooted in history.

Designated as one of the first rural historic districts on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, the valley reflects generations of farming, community life, and resilience .

Today, that history is still visible in the landscape, the buildings, and the stories that continue to be shared here.
