Irish in Ashe County?

March 17th from 5-7pm
The Irish influence in Ashe County - do we exaggerate it or do we minimize it? Join us on St. Patty’s Day, Friday March 17th from 5-7pm to hear local historian Josh Beckworth dispel some myths and celebrate unheralded contributions. Afterwards, listen to old time Irish-influenced music courtesy of Josh, his wife Sarah Beckworth, and his brother-in-law Darron Dotson (together, the Poison Branch Band). We will also have some St. Patty’s Day themed refreshments.

Art To You with Laura: Paint Your Barn

Do you have a barn that you adore? Art to You with Laura will be at The Old Store on Saturday, March 25th from 2-5:30pm for a Paint Your Barn workshop.

To sign up: 

Register online here. Then email a picture of the barn you want to paint to Laura at lauradunlevy@gmail.com (cropped how you would like it on the canvas) by Wednesday, March 22nd.
Ticket price includes one 16x20 inch pre-stretched canvas. All paint materials provided. Acrylic Paint. Recommended ages (12-100). Lite Snack provided.

Birding with Brian

April 15th at 9am

Last summer, local birding enthusiast Brian Watson presented Blue Ridge Birding Basics. Join Brian this April as he discusses the various types of birds you can see in the Blue Ridge Mountains during the spring season. 

Following the presentation there will be a short birding hike (about 1 mile) along Grassy Creek, weather permitting. Bring binoculars if you have them, and good walking shoes or boots for the hike.

All About Honeybees with Kim Pitts

April 22nd from 1-2pm
Come and learn about honeybees, beekeeping, and how you can protect and care for our local honeybee population with Kim Pitts, education coordinator for the Ashe County Beekeepers Association. Kim will bring her observation hive, so we can take a close look at what "busy as a bee" really means!

Music Therapy on the Harp by Carole Green

April 23rd from 2-4pm
Certified Music Practitioner and Harpist Carole Green has been playing music to help shepherd the dying for many years. According to Carole, "Music is a powerful way of giving people some peace and letting them know we’re with them." She doesn’t play familiar tunes that could call a patient back when they need to move on. Known as Music Thanatology, playing music for the dying is an ancient art. Come learn about Carole's incredible work, the science behind it, and listen to her play the harp.

History of Ashe Mail Carriers & Postcard Writing

May 5th from 2-3pm Mail carriers played an important role in rural communities, especially in the mountains.  Learn about the history of the Ashe mail carriers with local historian, Lonnie Jones. There will be an opportunity to write postcards to mail from the Grassy Creek Post Office as well.

Plant Bustique @ The Old Store

May 7th from 1-6pm
Plant Bustique is a small, mobile plant boutique serving the Western NC area and they are going to be in Grassy Creek at The Old Store on Sunday, May 7th from 1-6pm!

Book Talk: Stories I Grew Up With: Growing Up in the Ashe County, North Carolina Mountains by Lonnie Jones

May 7th at 2pm If you know Lonnie Jones or follow him on Facebook, you know he tells wonderful stories of growing up in Grassy Creek. Now his stories are compiled in one book!  Join us as Lonnie talks about his book and shares some of his stories in person.

The Jeff Little Trio

May 20th at 5:30pm

Jeff Little is an award-winning musician from the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. With few exceptions the piano does not play a prominent part in Americana or Appalachian music and is rarely the lead instrument. But Jeff Little is an exception and a remarkable one. Jeff has not only been recognized as a critically acclaimed musician but also a true music innovator.

Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery Wine Tasting

June 3rd from 3-6pm
We are so excited to welcome Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery to The Old Store for a wine tasting event with special music by The Mountain Laurels!
Grassy Creek Vineyard & Winery is based in Elkin, NC and has a delicious selection of wines. They grow all of their own grapes to make their wine. Join us to sample their wine and learn about growing grapes and making wine in North Carolina.
We will have some snacks and tasty treats to pair with the wine.
The Mountain Laurels is an all-female 'Celti-lachian' band featuring both traditional and classical music. They perform a blend of Americana, Celtic and folk music typical to the roots culture of Western North Carolina.
Join us on the deck for an afternoon of good wine and good food!

Art To You with Laura: Rosé with Monet

June 10th from 2-5:30pm
Art to You with Laura will be at The Old Store on Saturday, June 10th from 2-5:30pm for Rosé with Monet. Paint your own Monet-inspired painting and sip some rosé.

Grassy Creek History Tour

June 24th from 2-4pm
The Grassy Creek Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. Learn about the history of Grassy Creek and get a tour of the historic district with local historian and Grassy Creek native Lonnie Jones.

Christmas Tree Farm Tour

July 21st from 3-4pm
Ever wonder how that beautiful, real Christmas tree got to your home? Carrie McClain from Hart-T-Tree Farms will explain the journey of a Christmas tree.

Reenacting American Historic Periods with Clint Johnson, Nora & Cassie Peterson

July 23rd 2-4pm Clint, Nora, and Cassie will talk about their experiences re-enacting American Historic Periods like the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, and the Wild West.

Wild Mountain Mamas & A Few Papas Too! with Sandy Lassen

July 30th 2-3:30pm

Local poet Sandy Lassen will read mountain folk poems from her book “The Teeth of Southern Smiles,” plus tell tales about her area ancestors and their descendants.  

Sandy is a native Floridian (or self-described "Floridiot") who arrived in Ashe County in 1989 and discovered that half her mom’s ancestors were from the Ashe County area in the late 1700’s when it was still part of Wilkes. Sandy will be talking about why her ancestors left, where they went, and how she was the first one from her branch of the family to move back to Ashe County in nearly 200 years.

History of the Virginia Carolina School

August 26 2-3:30pm The Virginia Carolina School was one of the few schools in the United States managed by two states. Join local historian and VCHS graduate Lonnie Jones to learn about the extraordinary history of VCHS, its founding in 1913 and its destruction due to arson in 1967.
