At The Old Store, we believe some stories are too important not to tell—and the story of the New River is one of them. Winding through Ashe County, the New River is not only one of the oldest rivers in the world, but also the heart of our community and home to countless species of wildlife. Its history of conservation is rich, and this spring, we’re celebrating that legacy with a truly special event.
Join us on Saturday, May 17th for Saved by a Salamander Day—a celebration of nature, community, and one legendary amphibian. 🦎
In partnership with the New River Conservancy and a wonderful group of local organizations, this event is a chance to learn, reflect, and connect with the efforts that have kept the New River wild and free. From educational talks and hands-on activities to music, food, and local vendors, there’s something for everyone.
According to local legend, when plans were made in the 1970s to dam the New River and flood the Grassy Creek valley, a small but mighty creature stood in the way. A hellbender salamander helped shift the tide, raising awareness of the area's unique ecosystem. James Watson, an Old Store staff member and herpetology enthusiast, dove into the story and uncovered just how important this little amphibian may have been in protecting our valley.
That turning point helped pave the way for the New River’s designation as a National Wild and Scenic River and the birth of the New River Conservancy—both essential in preserving the natural beauty we enjoy today.
