Grassy Creek, North Carolina, is a place rich in history and tradition. The foundations of this close-knit community were laid by pioneering families who settled in this Appalachian region, each contributing to the Grassy Creek community today. Among these were the Greer, Phipps, Weaver, Pierce, Cox, Anderson, Jones, Young, Deboard, Pugh, Scott, Thomas, Halsey, Reeves, Wagg, Adams, Blevins, Davis, Hale, Osborne, Spencer, Stump, Hash, Sturgill, Grace, and Baker families.
The Sturgill Family and The Old Store
One of the most notable families in Grassy Creek's history is the Sturgill family. They were instrumental in establishing The Old Store, which has long served as a cornerstone of the community.
Brad Sturgill, a prominent figure in the community, operated this gas station store with dedication and care. "The Station" became a landmark in Grassy Creek, serving the needs of the local population and fostering a sense of community spirit. Brad Sturgill continued to run the store until around 1990 when it was purchased by the Chefas family.
Recognizing the historical significance of the location, the Chefas family transformed "The Station" into the main office for Hart-T-Tree Farms. This transition marked a new chapter in the building's history, ensuring it remained a vital part of the Grassy Creek community. Today, Hart-T-Tree Farms continues to honor the legacy of the Sturgill family by maintaining the building's historical charm and importance.
