A Taste of Tradition: Blueberries in the Appalachian Mountains

Long before blueberries filled pies and pancakes, they thrived wild across the hills and valleys of the Appalachian Mountains. These sweet berries have been part of Appalachian life for generations—gathered by hand in late summer, preserved for winter, and treasured for both their flavor and their healing properties.
Here in Grassy Creek, North Carolina, that tradition is still alive today. At The Old Store, we invite visitors to experience it firsthand through our pick-your-own blueberry patch, where the simple act of gathering berries connects you to generations of mountain life.
Blueberries in Appalachian History and Folk Medicine
Blueberries have long been valued not just for their taste, but for their role in Appalachian wellness traditions. Native communities and early settlers relied on them as a natural source of vitamins and antioxidants, often drying or canning them to last through the colder months.
In Appalachian folk medicine, blueberries were used in a variety of ways. Rich in antioxidants and vitamin C, they were believed to support immunity, reduce inflammation, and promote heart health. Mountain herbalists brewed blueberry leaf tea for sore throats and digestive issues, while the berries themselves were used in poultices for minor skin irritations.
Today, modern science confirms what Appalachian communities have always known—blueberries are a true superfood.
From Mountain Fields to the Kitchen Table
Blueberries remain a beloved part of daily life in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Whether eaten fresh by the handful or preserved for later, they carry the memory of shared tables and simpler times.
Traditional Appalachian recipes highlight their versatility and simplicity. From buttermilk blueberry muffins to wild berry dumplings, these dishes were designed to make the most of what the land provided. One enduring favorite is the classic cast iron blueberry cobbler—warm, buttery, and just sweet enough to let the berries shine.
Even today, blueberries are used to create jams, jellies, wines, vinegars, and desserts that reflect the heart of Appalachian cooking.
